Hello dear readers! It has been exactly one week from when I last wrote a post. Since then I have successfully made it through a week of school, had an interview for my internship, continued to discover the city of Palma, visited a couple of beaches for a CIEE excursion, and also went to the Carneval parade here in Palma for another CIEE excursion.
In this blog post, I'll be talking about my internship and how my interview last week went. Last week and this week are when all of the girls in my program had/are having their internship interviews. Silvia, the internship coordinator here, meets with everyone about an hour before to ensure that we know how to get to our place of work and to translate if need be in the interview. I met Silvia wearing professional business attire (so really painful flats because I hadn't broken them in before I came here, my black business suit, and a blouse). The hotel that I will be interning at is a twenty minute bus ride from Plaza de España. The bus stop for the hotel is really simple. You just walk right across the street and there the hotel is. Silvia and I walked in through the revolving doors and were awed by how gorgeous the lobby was. We were told to wait until the interviewer would walk out. While we were waiting, we pulled back the curtains and there was a stunning view of the ocean. Needless to say, I am very excited to start my job just to be able to see the ocean every day.
Diego, the director of reception at Hotel Nixe Palace, was the one that conducted the interview. He was really nice and actually can speak German! So when Silvia told him that I knew German, he responded back to me in German and we were able to converse. Silvia said that he was very impressed that I knew the language. The other exciting news of my interview was that I will not only be working the front desk (or reception as it is called here) but Diego asked if I would be interested in working in sales or events as well. Of course I said yes, so I will also be doing some event planning here as well! I am so glad that I will be interning at this hotel. It seems like the perfect fit for me! Diego was also saying that most of their clientele is that of British and German so my little knowledge of Spanish won't hinder me that much in the job.
I won't start for two more weeks but when I start I will be working in reception and then later in my time here I think I will switch over to events because it then will be high tourist time here. I'll have more to talk about when I start. I will for sure make a post about my official first day at the hotel.
Be sure to look at the photo gallery for some photos from this past week. So from my side of the world and until next time, Hasta luego!
Update: I have to actually interview again for a different hotel. I got an email after I wrote this blog, and I didn't want to erase the whole thing because I spent a while typing everything out. Hotel Nixe Palace ended up not going through with the internship. Due to it being a five star hotel and me barely having any experience, I guess they decided they couldn't take me. But, I already have another interview at Hotel Caballero (Caballero means knight in Spanish). So that's the good news out of this whole situation. Also, this hotel is located in the German area of Mallorca. So I will still get to practice my German after all. Look out for a blog post about my second interview in the next few days!
